July 9, 1963 – November 14, 2025
In Loving Memory of Burkley “Big Burk” Sain
Burkley Clifton Sain, age 62, of Selmer, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 11:30 p.m. at West Tennessee Healthcare Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee. He was born on July 9, 1963, to the late James (J. C.) Clifton Sain and Mae Eller Dancer Sain of Selmer, Tennessee. From a young age, Burkley was a devoted member of First Baptist Church. He was a man of strong faith and deep love for the Lord—a loyal son, a proud Marine, and a devoted father. A 1981 graduate of McNairy Central High School, Burkley went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin before answering a higher calling to serve his country. He joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served faithfully for four years and was honorably discharged in October 1986.
Following his military service, Burkley continued a life dedicated to serving others through law enforcement. He devoted more than 20 years to the City of Jackson Police Department, serving in multiple capacities including Police Officer and Financial Responsibility Enforcement Officer. During his tenure, he earned Life Saving Merits in recognition of his bravery and commitment to protecting others. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and, for a time, as a Tennessee State Trooper.
Burkley was deeply committed to his community and civic engagement. He was a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he embodied the organization’s principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. He was also an active member of the NAACP, standing firm in his belief in equality, justice, and the advancement of his community. Burkley had an adventurous spirit and a love for travel. During his time in the Marines, he was stationed in Japan—an experience that shaped his appreciation for the world beyond home. In 2023, he traveled to Greece with his daughter Jessica, and later that year vacationed in Puerto Rico with Jessica and Taylor, creating memories they will forever cherish. He also had a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles. Burkley proudly owned an SS Monte Carlo, a Camaro, and a Hayabusa racing bike. He loved spending his free time riding and racing at the local track in Jackson, surrounded by friends who shared his enthusiasm.
In 2021, Burkley’s health began to decline. During that time, his mother, Mae Wallace, stepfather, Don Wallace, and best friend, Gregory Slack, provided steadfast support—often accompanying him to doctor’s appointments and offering help whenever it was needed. Gregory was a trusted friend whom Burkley could call on at any time.
Burkley is survived by his loving family: his mother, Mae Wallace; stepfather, Don Wallace; sister, Dru Broadway (Brandon Pusser) of Selmer, TN; and his children—Jessica Sain of Dyersburg, TN; Josh Sain of Nashville, TN; Derek Sain (Antoinette Sain) of Corinth, MS; and Taylor Sain of Jackson, TN. He also leaves behind ten cherished grandchildren, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, stepsiblings, and extended family members.
Burkley’s greatest joy came from being surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren. His love for them was immeasurable, and he treasured every moment spent with them—particularly his special bond with Rhea’na. Burkley will be remembered for his strength, faith, courage, sense of humor, and the unconditional love he had for his family. His legacy of service and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who know and love him.
