Freddie Jean
Miller
October 7, 1949 – August 3, 2020
Ms. Freddie Yarbrough Miller was born October 7, 1949 in Lexington, TN to the late Fred Pete and Sarah Geneva Yarbrough. She was the youngest of four children, Freddie Yarbrough Miller departed this life on Monday, August 3, 2020 in Philadelphia, PA. Freddie was primarily educated in the McNairy County School System, until her senior year when she graduated from, the newly integrated, Dunbar High School in Savannah, TN. With a father who was a sharecropper and a mother that was a homemaker, growing up at the height of the civil rights movement, a strong work ethic and equality mindset was ingrained in her DNA. Freddie committed her life to Christ at an early age. Over the years, she was a member of her parent's church, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and served as an usher and choir member. She later joined the Cypress Creek 1st Baptist Church family. As one of the mothers of the church, she loved praising and worshiping the Lord. Freddie encouraged her loved ones to seek God’s word and pray for guidance, in any life situation. Freddie spent her adult life serving others, either in the school system or through church activities. Occasionally, Freddie fellowshipped with the Avery family at St. Rest MB Church in Guys, TN and maintained her childhood affiliation with the Tennessee River Missionary Baptist District Association. Freddie pursued higher education at Lane College in Jackson, TN. She obtained her B.S. degree in Business and continued her education endeavors by attaining her teaching certification in Secondary Education. Upon graduating from Lane College, she was blessed with a son, Nathaniel Hurt. Freddie was employed for 38 years with the McNairy County Board of Education, serving as a tenured educator for Ramer Elementary School in Ramer, TN her entire career. During her 38-year tenure, she formed friendships with fellow teachers and staff throughout the county. Over the years, as a committed and caring teacher, former students thought fondly of her, and she often taught her early students’ children and at times, even grandchildren. Freddie retired from education in 2010, but still imparted her wisdom, while she embraced life and kept learning new things.
Obituary In her retirement she was active in the community with the local NEA, NAACP chapter and McNairy County High School Alumni Association; Freddie contributed to St. Jude’s Children Hospital and the Relay for Life.In 1980, she exchanged nuptials with Eddie Miller, gaining a loyal and sup-portive sister-in-law, Easter (Arthur) Wyke. During their marriage, Freddie & Eddie were blessed with two children, their eldest daughter, Courtney and their youngest daughter, Sandra Miller. She also gained a large extended family, the Millers. Often, you would hear Freddie laughing, telling a story, or wearing a smile on her face. She was an avid reader, who enjoyed reading the Bible and works of fiction, such as mystery books. Freddie thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family, laughing with loved ones, making treks to visit family in North Carolina and Atlanta, GA. She was a loving and caring person who lived by the Golden rule and was not easily stirred. She was a selfless mother, devoted caregiver to her elderly parents, proud, doting grandmother, a loving sister, trusted confidante, and admirable friend. To know her was to love her. She was preceded in death by: a beloved brother, Terry Yarbrough; and a sister in law, Elsie Yarbrough. Freddie leaves to cherish her loving memory, her three children, Nathan (Soni) Hurt Sr, Courtney (Jerel) Miller, and Sandra Miller; Jerel Davis, who she lovingly referred to as a “2nd son”; a committed friend, Eddie Miller; an older brother W.T. Yarbrough and a beloved sister, Georgella (Phillip) Thornton; 5 grandchildren, Savannah Hurt, Jaden Davis, Nathaniel Hurt II, Noah Thomas, and Janelle Davis; nieces, Michelle and Joy Thornton, and Michelle Sweet; nephews, Fredrick Yarbrough, Michael Jones, Michael Thornton, and Phillip A.
