Obituary

Velma Wyke devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dedicated church and community worker put on her Celestial garments on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at 7:44 a.m.

She was the seventh child of ten born on Sunday, August 12, 1923 in Guys, TN to Robert Lee and Elzettie Luster Burns.  Velma received her formative education from the McNairy County School System; Adams Chapel Elementary School and McNairy County High School, graduating in 1945.  Velma was a member of the Adams Chapel Methodist Church in Guys, TN, joining at age 13 and was a faithful and active member until her health declined.

Velma married Arthur Willard Wyke, who passed on Saturday, December 03, 2005, on March 11, 1944 and to this union four children were born:  Theresa Wyke (Andrew deceased) Shelton, Arthur (Easter) Wyke, Jr., Thelma Wyke (Larry) Robinson, and Marvin L. Wyke.

She had nine grandchildren:  Pamela Shelton (Brian) Alleyne of Atlanta, GA, Bridget Shelton (Lamar) Hawkins of Atlanta, GA, Frederick Wyke (deceased), Kevin (Jennifer) Wyke of Ramer, TN, Sonya Wyke (Andy) Cox of Jackson, TN, Quincy Wyke of Ramer, TN, Kellie Robinson (Joseph) Harris of Nashville, TN, Christopher Robinson of Murfreesboro, TN, and Stuart (Carissa) Robinson of Murfreesboro, TN; fifteen great grandchildren, Noah (Madison) Cox, Laila, Makyla, Champion, Maleah, Lennox, Malakhi, Stokely, Gabriel, Kayden, Lilah, Nyla, Ariya, Jaheim, and Reagan; three great great grandchildren, Rose, Karina, Kolson, and one great great grandchild on the way; two sisters in law, Carrie and Violet Wyke; one nephew, Ernest Campbell, a first cousin, Brother Will Luster, Jr.; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.

Granny's house was always lively, especially on Sunday after church when the children and grand children would gather for fun and delicious food.  There was always a clean house with shiny wood floors that you could eat off .  She would always say, "I never had nice things growing up" and she certainly made the best of it; she would rub on the stove and refrigerator until they shined and even to the end she would wash and rub her face towel with bare hands until white as snow.  What a great life, you almost made it to age 100.
